| The Unremarkable Nipple - a journey with breast cancer by Sue Mcleod Pub Dunmore Press NZ |
|
Anyone who has been through the experience of breast cancer will relate to most, if not all, of Sue McLeod's story
At age 49- going on 50-she discovered a lump in her left breast.
After a brief period of "head in the sand" -my own reaction exactly- she made the appointment with her doctor which was the beginning of her healing journey on the way to a modified mastectomy.
Her daily record of reactions and emotional turmoil from the time of diagnosis until her clearance, is honest and at times wryly amusing. Included with her diary are the reports from the medical specialists who were her consultants at the time.
The second part of the book offers information regarding the anatomy of the breast, some medical terms and a list and description of the diagnostic methods and tools used to determine whether a lump is friend or foe.
This book is an extremely comprehensive account, not only of a personal experience of Breast Cancer and available treatments, it also offers advice on coping with the disease and related emotions, like grief, and practical information about where to seek help, there is also a section about complementary treatments and myths to discredit. The personal experiences of several other women are included at the end of the book - more stories we can relate to.
The most important message Sue has for us is to be constantly aware of our breasts; any lump, or change in the condition or appearance of the breast is an urgent signal for us to act. See the doctor immediately, for early detection and treatment means that a cure is possible.
I found this book so easy to read, and will certainly offer it to my daughters.
It has also been read by a younger friend of mine with no family experience of breast cancer who found it fascinatingly informative.

It is a book , in my opinion, that all women would do well to read.
